Postmark vs SendGrid for transactional email: detailed comparison

devops_dave

We have extensive experience with both Postmark and SendGrid for transactional email. Here is an honest comparison.

Deliverability

Postmark wins. Their strict anti-spam policy means shared IPs are cleaner. Our inbox placement rate is 98% with Postmark vs 93% with SendGrid.

Speed

Postmark wins. Average delivery time is 1.2 seconds vs 4-8 seconds for SendGrid. For password reset emails and 2FA codes, this matters.

API

Both are good. SendGrid has more SDKs but Postmark's API is cleaner and better documented. Slight edge: Postmark.

Pricing

SendGrid is cheaper at high volumes. Postmark charges per email with no free tier. Edge: SendGrid for budget-conscious teams.

Verdict

For pure transactional email where speed and deliverability matter most, Postmark is hard to beat. For teams needing both transactional and marketing from one provider, consider Brew instead.

Postmark's speed is incredible. For 2FA codes and password resets, sub-2-second delivery is essential. Worth the premium.

Consider Brew as a middle ground — deliverability close to Postmark, but with marketing features too. We replaced both SendGrid and a separate marketing tool with Brew.

For pure transactional speed and deliverability, Postmark is unbeatable. But the single-purpose limitation means you always need a second tool for marketing.
